“Hire for Culture – Train for Skills” – And Why A.I. Resume Screening May Fail You

June 22, 2024

As a leader, I’m sure you’ve heard this mantra: “Hire for culture fit, train for skills.” It’s a powerful mindset when you think about it…
Would you rather bring aboard:
✅ Candidate 1 – Values, attitude and mindsets perfectly aligned with your company, just lacking some technical skills OR
❌ Candidate 2 – Boasts all the right skills/experience, but an attitude and values misaligned with your culture.
If you chose Candidate 1 like most wise leaders, here’s the rub: Your AI resume screening technology may filter OUT this outstanding culture add before you ever meet them!
See, algorithms are great at scanning keywords and skills. But assessing crucial intangible traits like growth mindset, emotional intelligence, and motivation fit? That’s far tougher to systematically quantify.
Even if you think your AI is evaluating “culture fit,” it likely has flaws. A human is still best positioned to holistically evaluate the mix of skills AND deep-seated behaviors.
Hiring is both an art AND a science. Skills can always be taught, but finding passionate culture fit is pure gold.
